The Different Types of Italian Food You Should Try

Do you find yourself eating the same things over and over again? When it comes to food, it can be scary trying new things. However, there are countless varieties of food in the world that come from rich culinary palettes.

Italian food is popular throughout the world for a wide variety of ingredients. Garlic, tomatoes, olive oil, and oregano are some of the most common. But when you think of Italian food, does your mind automatically jump to spaghetti or pizza?

There are so many types of Italian food that extend beyond these two staple dishes. Here are some of those foods.

Chicken Cacciatora

"Cacciatora" is a word that means "hunter" in Italian. The word refers to meals that are prepared "hunter-style", typically with onions, herbs, tomatoes, bell peppers, and wine. Chicken cacciatora is prepared with braised chicken.

Linguini a Vongole

This is a dish that means "linguini with clams". There are two ways to prepare this dish.

The first is in bianco, with oil, garlic, parsley, and a little white wine. The second way is in rosso, which adds tomatoes and basil.

When the live clams are added to the hot water, they open and release a liquid that acts as the main flavoring in the dish.

There are a few variations of parmigiana dishes. In all of these meals, cheese and tomato sauce are present.

Eggplant parmigiana is the original dish, which consists of sliced eggplant with the aforementioned ingredients, baked in an oven. There are also meat varieties that became prominent in other areas of the world with Italian immigrant populations.

Veal parmigiana is made with a cut of meat from calves. The other common meat is chicken.

The tomato sauce in this dish pairs well with a glass of cabernet.

A Few Types of Italian Food for Dessert

Gelato is a frozen treat like ice cream that comes in many different flavors. It has a few differences, though.

Gelato has more milk and less cream than ice cream. This means it usually has less fat and fewer calories. It also tends to have less sugar.

Tiramisu is among the best Italian food. This dessert uses ladyfingers soaked in espresso. It results in layers of coffee-soaked savoiardi and mascarpone cheese, with a dusting of cocoa powder on top.

Panna cotta is a dome of sweetened cream that hails from the Piedmont region. It's topped with a chocolate sauce, liqueur, or a coulis of berries.

Sfogliatella is a flaky pastry that looks like stacked leaves. The crust contains soft cream and fruit. It is also topped with powdered sugar.
