1. Pizza Margherita

Margherita pizza is a staple for Italians, and it offers the perfect simplicity that makes it a crowd favorite. This pizza was made in 1889 to resemble the colors in the Italian flag. It was created by a chef named Raffaele Esposito who owned a restaurant called Pizzaria Brandi.

Esposito created this delicious pizza for the Queen Margherita of Savoy, who was to visit Naples, and from whom the pizza got its name. This pizza is made using flour, tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella cheese. The Queen loved this dish, as do so many pizza lovers today.

2. Calzone Pizza

This is a unique type of pizza that is made by folding a full-size pizza in half, leaving a half-moon-shaped delight. This pizza was created in Naples in the 18th century, and its name means pant leg. This is because the pizza was originally created to be a food someone could eat while walking or standing.

Calzones can be filled with a variety of toppings, and are often filled with meats such as sausage, ham, and salami. There can also be many different kinds of cheeses or a variety of cheeses added to a calzone, such as mozzarella, parmesan, and ricotta cheese. Tomatoes and marinara are also often added to this tasty dish.

3. Pizza Marinara

Pizza marinara is a Neapolitan pizza that is topped with tomatoes, oregano, extra virgin olive oil, oregano, and often times, fresh basil. It got it's name from the fishermen that would eat the pizza on their return home from fishing in the Bay of Naples. Some claim that the pizza was invented in the oldest pizzeria in the world, a restaurant called Pizzeria Port'Alba, in 1734.

It is one of the "protected" pizzas to Napoletana, as there is a specific process that comes with making the pizza such as the dough and key ingredients that go into it.

4. Pizza Bianca

Pizza bianca, also often referred to as white pizza, is a type of pizza that omits tomato sauce and substitutes it with other options such as sour cream or pesto. In Rome, this pizza is made without any sauce at all and is instead topped with olive oil, sauce, or herbs. Toppings on pizza bianca can differ depending on your preference.
